Researchers analyzed the gut microbiomes of 36 neurotypical preschoolers and compared them to standardized behavior assessments. The result: even mild, everyday differences in behavior, like withdrawal, were linked to the same microbial signatures seen in autism research, just in a subtler form.
That suggests the gut-brain axis isn't a switch that flips in clinical conditions. It's a continuum, active in every child's development, with autism representing one amplified expression of it.
