Aging has long been described in broad strokes: inflammation rises, tissues wear down, organs lose function. A study just published in Science narrows that story down to a specific molecular switch, and it may reshape how we think about anti-aging strategies.
At the center of the discovery is a signaling molecule called prostaglandin. As it accumulates with age, it interferes with macrophages, the immune cells responsible for clearing out old, toxic neutrophils. When that clearance process is disrupted, damaged cells build up and release inflammatory signals that spread across organs, from the brain to the heart to the muscles.
